Legendary Victor Rose

"Along The River" contains Traditional Métis and Original Tunes, many of which have never been recorded.

Proudly produced in Canada with Canadian content!

Victor Rose, born near Cochin, Saskatchewan, became very interested in music at a young age.  He remembers receiving his first violin made of tin during a school Christmas concert, which had been purchased from an Eaton's catalogue.  He later learned many tunes from Métis fiddlers such as his Uncle Del Landry, George Delorme and sons Leonard and Dennis, Joe Pratt and John Ross.  He accompanied some of them on guitar where they played mostly at dances and would take turns playing fiddle.  He soon learned to play the mandolin and banjo as well.  These tunes never left him, including the songs his mother would hum...tunes his Grandpa Joe Landry used to play.   Through the years he continued to play a little but it wasn't until close to his retirement that he picked up the violin again.

It was his desire to retrieve these old tunes so that this part of history would not be lost.  Victor's versions of these tunes are as close to the originals as he recalls them, most of which have never been recorded.  He wishes to thank Leonard Delorme and May (Delorme) McLennan for their assistance with the arrangements of these old fiddle tunes.

Victor is now inspired by the beauty of the North Saskatchewan River valley, where he resides with his wife Tina, in the hamlet of Frenchman Butte, SK.  This picturesque location, so rich with the history of the 1885 North West Rebellion, is where his fiddle tunes can be heard drifting down "along the river".

"The Gabriel Dumont Institute is honoured to record these forty old-time Métis fiddle tunes preserved by the memory and talent of Victor Rose. We cherish the legacy he has created for the Métis. We are also grateful to John Arcand for recognizing Victor’s invaluable contribution to our culture and heritage, for bringing the idea to the Institute, and for working with Victor to make the compilation. Vicki Arcand and Scott Duffee helped us coordinate the recording engineered by Desmond Lagace. We are very fortunate to have this group of Métis fiddle players and enthusiasts contribute to the project."
